Do you feel like your bills keep increasing each month? At Sun Plumbing here in Melbourne, FL, we know that every penny counts. With a little effort, you can save money on your water bill each month. While leaky faucets and running toilets are obvious water wasters, there are a lot of other things you can do to save money. Not only will conserving water help with your monthly bills, you will also be helping the environment.
Tip 1: Check Your Appliances
Little drips and leaks can add up over the course of a month. Our plumbing technicians often notice many toilets, faucets, and dishwashers with slow leaks. Just keeping your appliances in check can save you up to 140 gallons per week. That’s a lot of water!
Tip 2: Make Your Toilets and Faucets Water Efficient
You can significantly reduce your water usage with low-flow toilets. If you don’t have the money to replace your toilet right now, you can add weights to your toilet tank. We know it sounds strange, but it is effective. Here’s a guide that can show you how to do it. This little adjustment can save you up to 2-5 gallons per flush. That can add up over the course of the month. Don’t forget to change your toilet flapper each year. A toilet flapper breaks down quickly, simply replacing it each year will also help you save on your water bill.
Running your faucets while brushing teeth or doing dishes can consume several gallons of water. If you add aerators to your faucets, it will reduce the amount of water you are using. Here’s the good news, it will even increase the water pressure. Aerators mix water with air and come through the faucet like a sieve. The water gets compacted so that even though the amount of water is reduced, you don’t see a difference in water pressure. In some cases, you may even notice stronger water pressure. This little adjustment can save you approximately 120-180 gallons of water per week.
Tip 3: Be Conscience of Running Water
If you can shorten your shower by a couple of minutes each day, you can save 2-10 gallons per minute, depending on your shower head. By turning off the water while you are brushing your teeth, you can save 3 gallons per day. Use the dishwasher instead of hand washing your dishes as this will help save water too.
Tip 4: Upgrade your Appliances
While this tip does require an upfront investment, replacing your appliances with Energy Star versions will save you money over time. Plus, you get to enjoy new, quiet machines for your laundry and dishes. Oftentimes, you can get tax credits or rebates for making the switch. Check out the Energy Star rebate finder to learn more.
