We have all heard that irritating sound at one point in our lives – the never-ending drip of a leaky faucet. They can go unnoticed for quite a while if they are in a rarely used bathroom or a laundry room sink. But, if it is happening in your master bathroom while you’re trying to sleep or in your kitchen while you’re at the table working on your laptop, then you know how annoying the constant sound of dripping can be!
3 Common Causes of a Leaky Faucet
Worn Out O-Ring
The O-Ring is a small piece, attached to a screw, that holds the faucet handle in place. If the drip is coming from the handle and not the spout, this is a possible cause.
Corroded Valve Seat
The valve seat connects the faucet and the spout. Over time, the valve seat can become corroded. If the drip is coming from the spout, this is a possible cause.
Water Pressure
If you have noticed that your faucet handle or spout only drips when the handle is positioned a particular way or during certain times of day, then your water pressure may be the cause.
How to Fix Leaky Faucet
If you are handy or are good at following YouTube tutorials, you may be able to fix the problem yourself. It will likely require a trip to the hardware store once you determine the issue. Here are the three main steps to fixing the problem:
1. Determine the type of sink you have.
This determines the type of faucet parts you may need. You could have a cartridge faucet, ball faucet, or ceramic disk faucet.
2. Turn off the water supply!
This is VERY important. If you do not take this precaution, you will end up with a stream of water in your face. The water supply valves should be located under the sink. Turn off both the hot and cold valves completely.
3. Disassemble the faucet and inspect for wear/damage
Slowly begin to take your faucet apart, piece by piece, checking each piece for damage, wear, or breakage. This is how you determine which part needs to be replaced. Take the part with you to the hardware store to ensure you buy the proper part the first time, saving you from multiple trips.
