What Is the Purpose of Water Filters?

Whether a small filter in your water bottle or a whole-house system, water filters serve the same purpose.  They are designed to filter out contaminants from your water.  Why does that matter?  Contaminants can be dangerous, particularly in large doses.  

You may remember that in 2014 the residents of Flint, Michigan faced a terrible health crisis due to contaminated water.  The city switched the source of its residents’ drinking water (tap water) from Detroit’s system to the Flint River.  They didn’t realize that the water contained high levels of lead, resulting in the residents becoming ill.

Reverse Osmosis Systems

This is not a flashback to your 9th grade science class!  Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems are water filtration systems available for your home or office.  There are point-of-use RO systems which means the water filter is connected to a single device, such as your kitchen sink.  There are also whole-house RO systems.  

“RO is the process by which pressure forces water through a semi-permeable membrane, creating a stream of treated water, called “permeate,” and a stream of reject water called “concentrate” or “brine.” These systems can potentially remove water contaminants such as lead, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), PFAS, arsenic, bacteria, and viruses.”
