Garbage Disposal Sink | Plumbing Melbourne FL

As experts in all areas of plumbing in Melbourne FL, Sun Plumbing would like to offer you some tips about what to do when your garbage disposal isn’t working properly. If you have had a garbage disposal for any length of time, then you have probably experienced a problem with it at least once.

What Does It Mean When My Garbage Disposal Makes a Humming Sound and Nothing Is Going Down?

Awww yes, the sink full of gross water and food debris and the annoying hum of a non-disposing disposal – not music to anyone’s ears! According to www.mrgarbagedisposal.com, the humming indicates that there is power going to your garbage disposal, but it is not functioning properly, usually caused by a “jam.” In other words, there is probably something wedged under one of the blades, preventing them from turning.

To fix this, we do not recommend sticking your hand down the disposal. If you are determined to do this, then be sure that you have turned off power to the disposal. Another way to fix this issue is by turning the breaker socket on the disposal unit, located under the sink, using an Allen wrench. It may free the jammed object.

Sometimes, the garbage disposal simply needs to be reset, much like restarting your cable box or flipping a switch in your breaker box. There is a reset button on the bottom of your garbage disposal unit. Try pressing that reset button to see if it solves the issue.

None of the Above Tips Fixed It!

If none of the above tips fixed your disposal, then it is likely time to replace it. Garbage disposals are one of the least expensive kitchen appliances to replace. You can probably find a decent garbage disposal for under $200, although that does not include the cost of installation. If you are fairly handy, then you can probably handle this repair. However, it is an uncomfortable and somewhat messy job. If you are not physically able to lay under your kitchen sink with the edge of the cabinet digging into your back, then we definitely suggest calling a professional plumber to install your new garbage disposal!

Other Garbage Disposal Tips

Here are a few little tips that we find helpful and wanted to share with you:

  1. To freshen up a stinky disposal, throw some lemon or orange peels down there. Run a little water, flip on the disposal, and breathe in the fresh, citrus aroma!
  2. Do not place potato peels down the disposal. That is a great way to cause a clog.
  3. Do not put rice down the disposal. It is already small, so it doesn’t need to be ground up by the disposal. However, rice expands in water. Too much rice can clog either your disposal or your kitchen pipes!
  4. Don’t put pasta down the disposal. Pasta can get chopped up into small bits by the disposal, but like rice, it expands in water and can really cause problems!
