At Sun Plumbing we deal with every kind of bathroom plumbing issue imaginable!  We realize that your bathroom is an essential room in your house that must remain in working order.  Bathrooms can have different configurations with some only having a shower and toilet, known as a half bath, some include a shower or tub and some include both.  You may have wondered if it affects your plumbing health or water bill if you take a bath or shower, so that is the answer that Sun Plumbing will provide for you today.

Baths vs Showers – Which Is Better for My Water Bill?

The less water you use, the less your water bill will be. In the debate of baths vs showers, showers win.  According to an article in The Sacramento Bee, most people use about thirty gallons of water in a 42-gallon bathtub, so based on the size of your bathtub, you may choose to use less or more.  A low-flow showerhead uses about two gallons per minute, and a standard showerhead uses about 2.5 gallons per minute.  If you take a ten-minute shower, then with either showerhead, you are still using less than a bath.  If you need to soak sore muscles, then do so without feeling guilty, but in order to maintain a lower water bill overall, showers should be your mainstay.

Baths vs Showers-  Which Is Better for My Plumbing?

While showers are better for your water bill, are they also better for your plumbing?  There doesn’t seem to be any evidence of either a bath or shower being better for your plumbing. The main thing to keep in mind is that it is important that you don’t develop bad habits while in the bath or shower that could harm your plumbing.  For example, avoid using a lot of oily bath products that can build up in your pipes.  Additionally, allowing a lot of hair down the drain will definitely cause clogs.  If you have ever had to clean hair out of a drain to unclog it, then you know how much can end up down there if you aren’t careful.  Regularly cleaning the hair out with a simple plastic tool bought at the hardware store could save you from clogs down the road.
